About Lotus Counselling

My first experience of counselling was as a client. I remember the feeling of being heard and how I felt safe to talk about what was happening for me at the time. I didn't feel judged or that I was expected to "just get over it" - I had time and space to attend to things, to heal.

This experience gave me the motivation to become a counsellor - to be able to offer others the safety, transparency and warmth that I had felt.

Since that time I have gained academic qualifications and nearly nine years of experience from volunteering and then providing counselling to adults (18+). I started Lotus Counselling in 2025 - the name reflects how, like lotus flowers, people can grow when they have the support and care that helps them to move through life's challenges.

How I Can Support You

Counselling is not one size fits all and to support you fully, I have adapted my practice to be as individual as you are. Some of my qualifications are listed below, but I have also worked with a variety of presenting issues, including:

Bereavement (including child and pet loss)

Autism

ADHD

Anxiety

Depression

Relationship issues (including friendships)

Stress and trauma

LGBTQ+ related issues

My Approach

Safe, non-judgemental space

As a counsellor, I provide a safe, non-judgemental space for you to reflect on what is causing you difficulty in your life.

Person-centred approach

I am a person-centred counsellor, which means the sessions are about you, your experience and your feelings.

Gentle Exploration

I remain myself within the therapeutic space, which means I respond to what you say with curiosity or gentle challenge - the benefit of this is that it supports you to acknowledge things about yourself or your experiences, which in turn helps you to realise new things that allow you to move towards positive change.

Sessions & Fees

Counselling is effective when a client feels they can open to, and ultimately trust, their counsellor. For this purpose, I offer a no obligation, 30-minute, free telephone call to see if we would work well together.

I provide in person and remote sessions that last for 50 minutes and are charged at the following rates:

In-person counselling costs £55 per session

Online/Telephone counselling costs £45 per session

Please note that I offer a reduced rate based on financial circumstances (limited spaces) to trainee counsellors, keyworkers, low income, OAP's, students and those who are unemployed. Please contact me to discuss this further.

Some frequently asked questions

How do I contact you?

It is best to email me as I cannot take calls when I am conducting sessions.

I’m having sessions; can I contact you at any time?

Contact with me should only relate to your sessions – booking, cancelling or rescheduling them. Should you need immediate support outside of your sessions, please contact NHS direct telephone 111, your GP, the emergency services or the Samaritans Freephone 116123.

Where will my sessions take place?

I currently conduct in-person sessions at Academy HQ, Stalybridge – the building has a free car park and is fully accessible for wheelchair users. If you have a preference for remote sessions these will happen via telephone or Zoom.

How regularly will I need to attend counselling?

Initially, to develop the therapeutic relationship and build trust, it is recommended to attend weekly. However, if you feel that a weekly session is no longer useful then I have the option to offer sessions fortnightly or monthly.

How long will I attend counselling for?

This depends on what you are currently struggling with and how soon trust is built between us. Should you have an idea of how many sessions you feel you need then please share this with me during the introductory call.

What should I do if I cannot attend a session?

Please contact 24 hours before your session – this can be a text or by responding to your email reminder. Notifying me with less than 24 hours’ notice may result in a fee.

Reflections & Insights

The Window of Tolerance – a useful tool for clients?

The Window of Tolerance, coined by Dr Dan Siegel, is a tool that can be used to support clients to understand what could be happening when they feel anxious and out of control and/or the opposite: numb and lethargic.

The Emotions wheel – an aid to identify how you are feeling

Some individuals struggle to name how they are feeling. Within the neurodiverse community this is termed as alexithymia. The emotions wheel helps to aid people to identify what they are feeling.
